I have had several health professionals approach me about single Black mothers and a spike in depression and suicide. Let's be clear, this isn't new. Statistically, women are more prone to depression than men, and Black women are at the highest risk. Men are statistically more likely to commit suicide, but we are seeing upticks in female suicide. We even have a situation where Black girls 5-13 lead that age group in successful suicides. While I love the notion of the strong Black woman, the way we define her today and the manner in which we praise it is promoting health outcomes that are killing our women in various ways.I was reared by a strong Black woman, but that strong Black woman was married to a strong Black man. Now, the term "strong Black woman" almost always refers to a single Black woman. Meaning she is being praised for doing something she shouldn't have to do. More importantly, a lot of what she is forced to do, she is not built to do. That takes its toll acutely and chronically. We will whine, blame, and complain but refuse to have serious discussions about causality! ~ Rick Wallace, Ph.D., Psy.D.Watch the video here: https://lnkd.in/ghA5iUMX#suicide #blackwomenanddepression #thestrongblackwoman #blackwomenandsuicide #blackwomenmentalillness #blackwomenmentalhealth #mentalhealth

A question to ask yourself about ALL the Black women in your life.As #womenshistorymonth comes to a close, consider this:1 in 5 Black women have a common mental health diagnosis. (Take all stats w/a grain🧂because they're rooted only those who've reported, meaning the #'s could be higher.)The culprits for Black women are performing as caregivers, macro & micro aggressions in the workplace + the wage gap & pink tax, poverty, social isolation, personal safety, & domestic abuse. Black women are 2Xs more likely to be diagnosed w/ anxiety & depression. 😞😢Check on a Black woman you ❤️ TODAY!#blackwomen #blackwomenandmentalhealth #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #blackwellnessmatters #blackmentalhealthmatters

BLACK WOMENS PAIN.We are constantly being shown time and time again examples of Black women's pain and we know that the lived experiences of Black women often results in us showing up at the top of statistics measuring disparities in health care and mortality rates. I understand that in order to challenge these disparities, we need to keep showing up and highlighting these situations. We need to keep up the awareness. What we do not need to show is traumatic experiences of Black Women on social media. I was thinking about this this morning with the video of Diddy and Cassie going viral and a lot of things came up for me. As it did when the video of the murder of George Floyd was shared, this video will cause mental health challenges including flashbacks, anxiety or depression for some, pain, secondary trauma, shame, embarrassment and fear for so many women. We do not need to see this damage to Black women's bodies over and over to highlight and amplify disparities and wrong doing from perpetrators. Please think about this when you are thinking about sharing for the sake of amplification. If anybody feels that they could benefit from support, there are helplines available. Check out Sister Space, Women's Aid, Refuge, Women's Trust for more information. #blackwomen #mentalhealth

“Black women have increased risk factors for maternal mental health disorders due to higher levels of trauma exposure throughout their lifetime; Research indicates that trauma exposure rates (defined as exposure to at least one traumatic event) during the perinatal period is 87% for Black women. These are much higher rates of trauma exposure when compared to the rates of trauma in perinatal women, which range from 29-74%.” Let's work together to raise awareness and support systems that address the unique challenges Black women face in maternal mental health. #MaternalHealth #AwarenessMatters #healthequity #healthequitynow #healthdisparities

I am SO tired of talking about women and girls only to be met with ‘this happens to men too!’ on every single post. Even if it did, and even if it happened at the same rate, I am still entitled to focus my work on women and girls, just as some academics focus their work on men and boys. If you accept, which most people do, that social issues, abuse, violence, harm and trauma impact men and women differently due to stereotyping, societal roles, expectations on them, and biases, then it is legitimate and acceptable to focus on those groups separately. Their experiences are different and they both deserve space to explore them without the other group. I am talking specifically about women and girls in my work because I want to, not because I have forgotten men and boys exist and I need reminding. I don’t troll psychologists or activists who talk about men’s mental health, or their traumas or abuse. I’m not under their posts every day like ‘This happens to women too, you know!’ I’ve said this so many times but the whataboutery of ‘what about men?’ on every single post about women and girls doesn’t actually help men and boys in their struggles or their traumas, and it’s not a comment that is left genuinely, it’s derailment and nothing more. Take up all that energy you have been using to post ‘this happens to men too!’ under my posts, save up all that time, and use it to help men and boys who you profess to care so much about. Trolling women on the internet is not activism, and isn’t helping men and boys who need compassion and support. Truth hurts. You are making zero difference to them. Do something useful. Unless of course, your ‘activism’ for men and boys has nothing to do with you caring for them or wanting to help them at all, and has much more to do with your hatred of women and girls?

Are ad hominem attacks hurting all and could they lead to "divided we fall"?What is ad hominem? In Latin, 'ad hominem' means “against the person."Does the United States of America have leaders and citizens who stand up to ad hominem attacks or who use ad hominem attacks? In debates, when your opponent starts using personal attacks because they can't persuade people that their underlying argument/premise is worthy then watch out. What is the science behind ad hominem attacks? Could it be that they are so hurtful our fight or flight instincts kick in causing us to have a visceral reaction to those comments as Caroline Gleich points out?Thursday 6/27/24 the two people running to be our next President will debate on CNN. Can you pay attention to their words and their arguments? Will they use ad hominem attacks? Will you be persuaded by the personality or by the positions each candidate espouses? The Presidential election will be here before we know it. It's time for us all to do what we can, when we can to help democracy not only survive, but thrive.

I do not know Caroline Gleich or her Politics. I DO KNOW that her post is NOT about Politics - it's about how cruel and hateful others are.Her aspirations to work for our country and the people of her state has been met with ugliness, threats and just all out - hate. How has this become acceptable? How do people on the other side of a keyboard explain themselves for insults and sheer meanness accept their own behaviors?Yes - our country has become deeply divided, uses threats and scare tactics to destroy good will. This is 100% Unacceptable. Period. So, this is NOT a political post. This is a post about Compassion. Unity. Support & DOING BETTER - As a country, a United Nation and for the Mental Health of Humankind.Practice Kindness & Compassion - today, tomorrow and all of next week. Let's create Change!
